Testing a new social commerce format before a wider rollout
Define the format, outcome, stop conditions and comparison method for a small social commerce pilot before expanding it.
Trial a new social commerce format within a defined product and audience scope before expanding it. Set the customer outcome, operating requirements and stop conditions in advance. Views alone cannot tell a retailer whether the format is worth maintaining.
Define the format change
Name the current approach and the proposed format. A live demonstration, shoppable video and curated social collection involve different work and may offer different shopping actions.
Record the products, content, offer, route and support effort included in the pilot. If the aim is to learn about the format, avoid changing the product range and discount at the same time.
Confirm that the proposed shopping action is available to the retailer’s account and intended shoppers before advertising it. Check the public route where possible, including the item or variant reached. Platform documentation cannot establish the state of a particular account.
Set an outcome and stop conditions
Choose one primary outcome tied to the investment decision. If the format is intended to help selection, a defined move from eligible product inspection to a later buying action may be relevant.
If the decision concerns sales, use a stated store-order population, payment-status rule and later review of reversals.
Set stop conditions for an inaccurate offer, unavailable featured variant, failed shopping route or support work the team cannot manage. The ACCC can require businesses to back up claims about their products or services and may investigate misleading conduct. Strong engagement does not justify continuing a misleading offer.
Choose a fair comparison
Where the platform and retailer can assign comparable eligible people to the existing and new experiences at the same time, use the same outcome rule for both groups. Confirm that the assignment happens before the relevant social exposure.
If random assignment is unavailable, call the trial observational. Record differences in audience, paid distribution, stock, pricing and season.
A before-and-after change can guide a further trial, but it cannot isolate the format’s effect. Set the review date and observation period before launch so an early favourable chart does not decide when the pilot ends.
Decide whether to expand
Expand only when the route remains accurate, the team can operate it and the primary outcome meets the criterion chosen before the pilot. Otherwise, revise or hold the format.
Record any unmeasured handover between native social actions and store orders. A small pilot supports a bounded next step; its result need not apply to every product or audience.
