Showing price and product details without hiding important conditions

Keep the displayed price, pictured item and decision-changing conditions together in social shopping content. Recheck active offers when details change.

Show the product or variant, the single price and any condition that changes what the shopper receives or pays together in the social post. Display the price including GST and charges that apply to the offer, and place each material condition beside the claim it changes.

The Australian Consumer Law (ACL) prohibits misleading or deceptive conduct (section 18). The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) can require businesses to substantiate social media claims, investigate them and take compliance or enforcement action.

Make the price describe the pictured sale

Name the product or variant and make clear the price applies to the version and pack pictured. If versions have different prices, identify which one the displayed amount buys and check that it applies during the period the post appears.

Show one total price, including GST and charges that apply to the offer. If an additional charge cannot yet be quantified, name the type of charge as early as practical.

If optional delivery costs depend on the shopper’s destination, state that beside the price and explain the available choices.

Put a material condition with its claim

Treat a condition as material if it changes which product or variant the price buys, what is included, a compatibility or use limit, or what the shopper pays. State it beside the price or claim it changes rather than relying on a vague “conditions apply” note.

For example: “One pack — [price including GST]; pictured accessory sold separately.” Replace the placeholder with the actual price and keep the condition in the same caption.

If the format cannot fit the condition legibly, narrow the claim and keep the key condition in the post. Add a clearly labelled link, such as “Offer conditions”, to the complete terms before purchase.

Check more than the number

Compare the post’s image, name and stated features with the item opened by its shopping action. Check size, colour, quantity, included items and relevant use limits.

If a post shows a bundle but the shopping action opens a single-component offer, make that difference clear. State when a styling prop or demonstration accessory is not included.

A promised arrival date depends on destination, order timing and fulfilment circumstances. If the retailer can support only an estimate, label it as an estimate and state a condition that could change it.

Recheck an active offer

Review the post and the product information reached through its shopping action whenever the price or product details change. A change to that product information may not update an older price in the caption.

Check both the post and the product information after a change. Correct the earliest inaccurate message a shopper sees; a current store price does not make an older social claim accurate.
