Social shopping versus social advertising
Understand the different jobs of social shopping and paid social advertising, and choose what to fix when reach or the buying route falls short.
Social shopping lets someone inspect a product and move towards buying it from a social experience. Social advertising pays to put a message in front of an audience. Both can appear in one campaign: a paid post may carry a product action, and an unpaid post may lead to a purchase. The distinction is the job being funded and the next action offered to the shopper.
| Question | Social shopping | Social advertising |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate job | Help someone identify an item and move towards purchase | Gain paid distribution for a message |
| What to check | Product match, availability and purchase route | Audience, creative, spend and promised destination |
| Early signal | A product action shows interest in more detail | Delivery or engagement shows how the paid message travelled |
These are planning definitions, not separate legal categories. The ACCC gives general guidance on avoiding false or misleading claims and may act on false or misleading claims in social media advertising.
Choose by the problem to solve
If people see a product but cannot find the version shown, improve the shopping route. If the route works but too few relevant people see the offer, assess paid distribution. If visitors reach the listing yet hesitate, inspect the product information and offer before buying more reach.
A shopping action needs a real destination. Social storefronts often send customers to the retailer’s website to pay. The Australian Government says social media stores generally do not handle payments and customers are redirected to the business website to make a purchase. Check the actual route before implying that purchase is completed inside the social app.
How to Evaluate Your Social Commerce Strategy
- Check if people can find the product shownEnsure product match, variant, price and availability are accurate
- Assess if enough relevant people see the offerReview audience targeting and paid distribution effectiveness
- Inspect product information if visitors hesitateImprove descriptions, images and checkout flow on your website
Keep the ad promise and shopping offer together
A paid post can use a demonstration to attract attention and lead to a tagged or linked product. Before spending, compare the creative with the destination: exact item, variant, pack contents, price, availability and delivery wording. If an accessory shown in the ad is sold separately, say so clearly.
The ACCC says claims in social media advertising must not be false or misleading. Paying to distribute a post does not change that obligation. Review an active ad when its promotion or stock changes.
Pre-Spend Checklist for Social Ads with Product Links
- Verify the exact product in the ad matches the destinationCheck variant, pack contents, price and delivery terms
- Disclose if accessories are sold separatelyAvoid misleading claims about bundled items
- Review active ads when stock or promotions changeUpdate creatives to reflect current offers
Judge each job with the right evidence
For advertising, record spend, delivery and the action the ad asked for. For shopping, follow product actions through the destination and, where possible, to completed orders. Do not report an impression as a product visit or a product tap as a sale.
For website links, custom campaign URLs can be used to collect campaign data in Google Analytics. Use available ecommerce data to assess product activity and completed orders. Compare the same product, reporting window and offer before deciding whether to change distribution, the shopping route or the listing.
