Product Tagging

Product tagging in social content

Learn when to add a product tag, how to match it to the item shown and what to check on the public shopping route.

A product tag lets someone inspect an item shown in a social post. For an Australian retailer, decide whether the action is useful, identifies the right item and leads to an accurate offer. A tag cannot fix a misleading post or an incorrect listing.

What happens after a tap

A shopping tag connects content to a product record. The next view depends on the platform and merchant setup. In Shopify’s documented Instagram Shopping integration, eligible merchants can tag products in posts and image stories. Shoppers can view the tagged product and continue to the merchant’s online store checkout.

A shopping tag differs from an internal catalogue label or a general website link. The shopper should know which product the action identifies before tapping it.

Match the item and offer

Review the finished post, including its caption and on-screen claims. Identify the model, colour, size, pack contents and any accessory shown separately. If several items appear, make clear which one each tag identifies.

Compare the content with the tagged product and buying page. A product-family page can work if the advertised version is easy to find. Hold or correct the tag if the page silently substitutes another version or leaves the shopper unsure what is included.

Check the post and destination together as one offer so the tagged item, description, price and delivery terms are consistent.

The ACCC provides guidance on avoiding false or misleading claims. It can require businesses to back up claims made on social media, and may investigate and take compliance or enforcement action if a business makes false or misleading claims in social media advertising. Keep support for material claims alongside the post review, particularly where the caption or image makes a claim about the product or offer.

Confirm the feature and choose the moment

Check eligibility in the retailer’s actual account. For Shopify’s Instagram Shopping integration, a tagged product must be available in both the Meta catalogue and the Shopify online store. Account approval, supported location and product requirements also apply.

Add tags when the content has identified an item and given the viewer a reason to inspect it.

Checklist: Validating product tags on social content

  • Item clarityThe tag clearly identifies the product shown in the post
  • Offer consistencyThe version, pack contents and inclusions match the advertised offer
  • Timing appropriatenessThe viewer has a clear reason to inspect the listing without interruption
  • Correct routeThe tag leads to a usable product choice on the merchant’s website

Check product-level eligibility

For products published to Facebook and Instagram by Meta, Shopify lists further eligibility conditions. The product must require shipping, have a return policy and not be free. It must comply with Meta’s Commerce Policy and Facebook Community Standards, and its title, description and image must meet Meta’s catalogue specifications. A Google Product Category must also be assigned.

Fit the tag to the viewing moment

Consider audience micro-moments: brief occasions when people may be receptive to discovering products, such as morning commutes, weekend browsing or late-night scrolling. Choose relevant windows for your audience rather than assuming one posting time suits everyone.

Format can affect whether a tag is available at all. Shopify’s Instagram guidance says product tags can appear in posts and stories, but shopping stickers in stories can tag products only on image stories, not video stories. Check the content type before relying on a story tag.

Recheck active tags

Review active tags periodically and when the tagged variant, price, promotion, stock or destination changes. Confirm that the tag still represents the item and offer; correct the content or product details, or remove the tag where the platform permits it. Treat later tag activity and completed orders as separate measures.

For Instagram Shopping, the product name, description and price shown in tag details come from the Shopify listing. Edit the listing and publish the update; the Instagram description cannot differ from Shopify’s. If the displayed price is wrong, check both the Shopify price and compare-at price, then check Commerce Manager for a sale start or end date.

Instagram product tags can be moved or deleted. If a tag’s position or product association is no longer right, use the platform’s available editing options.

  2. Update source listingEdit the Shopify product listing and republish
  3. Fix incorrect pricingCheck both Shopify price and compare-at price; verify sale dates in Commerce Manager

  2. Tagging product variants accurately in Instagram postsMatch the variant shown in a social post to its product tag and buying page, including size, colour and pack contents.
  3. Checking a tagged shopping journey on mobileFollow a public product tag on a phone, check each handoff to order review and record where the route fails.
