Matching catalogue items to store product pages
Check that a social catalogue item opens the correct store product, variant and offer, then repair mismatches at their source.
Match a catalogue item to its store page by following the customer-facing route and checking the sale it presents. A page can load yet show the wrong variant, pack, price or availability. The customer should reach the advertised item, or a clear way to choose it.
Record the intended match
For each item, record its catalogue identifier and destination alongside the intended store product, variant attributes and internal product or variant identifier. This makes a changed page or redirect easier to diagnose than a product name alone.
| Result | What the customer reaches | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Match | The advertised item is selected or can be clearly chosen, with a consistent offer | Keep the route and set a review trigger |
| Choice unclear | The product family is right, but the advertised variant is difficult to find | Improve the destination or choice, then check again |
| Wrong sale | A different item, pack, price or unavailable choice appears | Hold the affected catalogue item until corrected |
These are review labels, not platform status codes. A product family page can work when the advertised choice is clear. It is a poor match if it defaults to a different item without making that difference apparent.
Follow the public route
Where the feature is available, open the catalogue item on a phone as a shopper in the intended market. Note the destination and any redirect. Compare its image and wording with the page’s product, variant choice, price and pack contents.
Select the advertised variant and follow it to cart or order review without placing an order. Check that the same item and offer carry through.
If the link opens a collection or home page, consider whether the customer must search again for a product already specified in the catalogue. If the product page was removed or replaced, correct the catalogue record rather than silently sending the customer to a related item.
Check the integration’s variant selection
Integration behaviour can vary. Follow the customer-facing route to check which product and variant the destination presents. If the advertised variant is not selected or easy to choose, correct the catalogue item or destination so the customer can reach the advertised choice.
A variant associated with a catalogue item is a reason to inspect the shopper’s route; it is not, by itself, proof that every landing page will open with that variant selected.
Fix the source of a mismatch
An old address, redirect, changed variant, product replacement or inaccurate source record can cause a mismatch. Record where the route diverges. Correct the owning store or catalogue data, then follow the public route again. If an active listing offers the wrong sale, pause or hide it where the channel allows while the correction is made.
The ACCC accepts reports about possible misleading or false claims and can require businesses to back up claims about their products or services. It may investigate and take compliance or enforcement action if a business misleads. Keep a dated record of the affected item, observed destination, correction and repeat check.
